Fine-Tuned for Life: Why the Universe Isn’t Just a Cosmic Accident

Table of Contents

Imagine betting your life savings on a single roll of the dice—and winning.

Now imagine winning 70 times in a row.

That’s the level of “luck” required for our universe to exist, says Justin Brierley in his thought-provoking analogy.

But is it really luck? Or does the universe’s jaw-dropping precision suggest something—or Someone—loaded the dice in our favor?

The Impossible Odds of Rolling a Life-Permitting Universe

Brierley starts with a simple dice game. Rolling a six once? Easy (1 in 6). Rolling sixes 70 times straight? The odds are 1 in 10⁵⁵—a 1 followed by 55 zeros.

To put that in perspective:

If you rolled the dice every 5 seconds, you’d need 100 trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion years to hit that streak.

Yet, our universe’s expansion rate after the Big Bang had similarly improbable odds.

  • Too fast? No atoms, stars, or galaxies.
  • Too slow? Cosmic collapse.
  • Instead, it landed perfectly—like hitting 70 sixes on the first try.

He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.

The Fine-Tuning Miracle—More Than Just Luck

The expansion rate is just one of 20+ “cosmic constants” fine-tuned for life:

  • Gravity’s strength.
  • Nuclear forces binding atoms.
  • Speed of light.
  • Mass of an electron

Alter any by a hair, and life becomes impossible. This level of fine-tuning suggests purpose, not chance.

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.

Multiverse Theory—A Faith-Based Alternative?

Some argue, “Maybe there are infinite universes, so we just won the lottery!” But Brierley counters:

  • No evidence exists for a multiverse.
  • Believing in infinite unseen universes requires as much faith as believing in a Creator.

Science thrives on evidence—and the evidence here screams design.

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

The Fingerprints of a Grand Designer

If you found a watch in a field, you’d assume a watchmaker.

Likewise, our universe’s precision points to a cosmic Watchmaker. The odds aren’t just unlikely—they’re impossible without intent.

As Brierley puts it: “The fact that we’re here shows someone loaded the dice. Maybe there’s no dice at all.”

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

I’ll leave you with a choice:

Option 1: Trust that everything—life, the universe, and your very existence—is just a cosmic accident, the equivalent of a tornado assembling a Boeing 747 from a scrapyard.

Option 2: Consider the possibility of an Intelligent Mind behind it all—One who crafted the universe with precision, purpose, and intention, including you.

If the fine-tuning of the universe is merely a fluke, it’s the most spectacular fluke in history.

But if it’s design? That changes everything.

You are not an accident. You are not a cosmic orphan, wandering in a meaningless void.

You are created. Designed. Intended.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

“Believing in God isn’t a delusion—it’s a perfectly reasonable conclusion when we look at the fingerprints on our universe.” — Justin Brierley
